A Success with Lantech
We worked with an industrial equipment customer in Louisville, KY who wanted to convert their sheet metal enclosure panels into pressure formed plastic panels. They were new to working with plastics, requiring our team to walk them through the design process and assist them with learning the basics. Their original metal panel design featured a series of curves and aesthetic details that had to be replicated using plastic. The customer had required overall part dimensions of 87" x 22" x 2" with tolerances as tight as +0.015".
We took the time necessary to overcome our customer's learning curve, educating them on the factors necessary to transfer their design. They collaborated with our engineering team to develop a functional product that was both aesthetically pleasing and within their budget. In addition, using plastics helped them realize the benefit of multiple color options that would have otherwise required painted sheet metal. We recommended smooth sheet ABS for the project as it offered the durability necessary for their application. All of their original textures and undercuts were bonded into injection molded blocks, which provided the fastening capabilities for each panel. We also attached hinges that offered the same performance and function like their original design. To ensure dimensional accuracy, each plastic panel underwent an extensive inspection process using 3D measurement scanning during each setup.
Within two weeks, we were also able to introduce them to a cost-saving alternative that streamlines their manufacturing goals. The new panel design offered superb aesthetics with a functional performance that was equivalent to sheet metal. As a result of our work, we've developed a long-term relationship with this customer that has now spanned over 20 years. We've also assisted them in several redesigns to help drive their costs down even further.
